Biography

Todd Holland has worked in television as a director for numerous series, beginning in the 1980s. Perhaps most recognized after winning both a Director's Guild Award and an Emmy in 2001 for his work on the half-hour comedic series Malcolm in the Middle, Holland has made a mark in prime-time television, as well as on the big screen.

His directorial career began in 1985, when he first directed episodes of the series Amazing Stories and Tales From the Crypt. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, his television credits grew to include episodes of series that covered a wide spectrum of genres. He directed episodes of the dramatic David Lynch series Twin Peaks (1990), the hilarious movie spin-off Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures, and the MTV teen drama My So-Called Life (1997). He also earned credits both as director and producer on the The Larry Sanders Show (1992). In 1998, he worked as a director on the prime-time hit Felicity, starring Keri Russell, a drama about college life in New York City. In 1998, he directed his first feature film, Krippendorf's Tribe, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Jenna Elfman, and Lily Tomlin. However, the strange comedy about a financially deceptive anthropologist struggled at the box office. Returning to his television roots, Holland continued his work as a director for prime-time TV. Centered around a child-star, Malcolm in the Middle earned much attention as a prime-time sitcom, and Holland's direction earned him awards for the show. Additionally, he has directed episodes of D.C. (2000) and The Time Tunnel (2002). ~ Sarah Sloboda, All Movie Guide

Personal life

Holland was born in Kittanning, Pennsylvania and raised in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He was an honor student, graduating from Meadville Area Sr. High School.[1] While there, he got his feet wet writing/directing/producing several parodies of movies popular at the time. Holland's romantic partner is actor and singer Scotch Ellis Loring, who played Dr. Ron and several "muse voices" on Holland's Wonderfalls.[2]

Career

After The Larry Sanders Show was cancelled, Holland started working in the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. The show was created by Linwood Boomer and ran for seven seasons with Holland directing a total of 26 episodes and serving as co-executive producer for the show. Holland had won two Emmy Awards for the show: both wins where for the category of Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series, his first one in the pilot episode of the show, the second for the episode "Bowling". He was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series as co-executive producer, but lost to Sex and the City.

Holland worked as an executive producer for Malcolm in the Middle, and co-created Wonderfalls with Bryan Fuller. He has also directed the films Kilroy, The Wizard, Krippendorf's Tribe and Firehouse Dog, many episodes of The Larry Sanders Show and one episode of Twin Peaks. He was awarded several Emmys for his work.

Holland was the head director of The Larry Sanders Show. He directed 52 episodes. He has also won one Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series for the series finale, Flip. Holland has also received 6 Emmy nominations for The Larry Sanders Show. The show is also the second longest show that Todd has worked for (the first being Malcolm in the Middle), although in this show, Holland directed more episodes than Malcolm in the Middle in this show, directing 52.

Holland is a member of the directing staff for the NBC sitcom 30 Rock. He directed the episode "Generalissimo," an episode for which he received an Emmy Award nomination, but lost to Jeffrey Blitz for The Office.

Holland is currently working with Justin Berfield (a star of Malcolm in the Middle) on Sons of Tuscon, a new Fox television sitcom. He directed the pilot episode of the show and is likely to direct more.
