Tokion
Tokion is a New York-based magazine covering indie music, art, design and fashion. It publishes separate US and Japanese
editions. The magazine refers to itself as "The National Geographic of pop culture." Tokion also produces the annual Creativity
Now Conference, a weekend-long seminar of panel discussions with speakers from across the creative spectrum.
History
Tokion was started in 1996 by Adam Glickman and Lucas Badtke-Berkow, two Americans living in Japan, and was originally intended to be a cultural bridge between Japan and the United States. It has since shifted focus to begin covering artists and musicians familiar to many audiences. Contributors to the magazine have included Nigo from Bathing Ape, Jonio Takahashi of Undercover, Takagi Kan, Shepard Fairey, Deanne Cheuk, Kevin Lyons and others. In 2001 Badtke-Berkow left Tokion to begin publishing Paper Sky and Mammoth Magazines in Japan, and Glickman began publishing both the Japanese and US editions of the magazine. Soon after, Tokion launched retail shops in New York City and Tokyo which sold limited-edition products created by artists covered within the magazine. Around this time, the magazine began producing short documentary films covering such topics as Jamaican dancehall and Japanese biker gangs. In 2003 it launched the Creativity Now Conference.
In 2005 the magazine was sold to new owners.
