Investment Dictionary: Tokyo Price Index - TOPIX

An index that measures stock prices on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). This capitalization-weighted index lists all firms that are considered to be under the 'first section' on the TSE, which groups all of the large firms on the exchange into one pool. The second section groups all of the remaining smaller firms.

Investopedia Says:
The TOPIX is believed to be more representative of the Japanese stock markets than the Nikkei because of the more fair representation of price changes and the inclusion of all the largest companies on the exchange.

Currently, about 1,600 first section companies are listed on the TSE, along with 500 second section companies.

Tokyo stock Price IndeX, commonly known as TOPIX, along with Nikkei 225, is an important stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange in Japan, tracking all domestic companies of the exchange's First Section. As of 10 November 2008, there were 1713 companies listed on the first section of the TSE. The market value for the index on the same date, was 294,733 Billion Yen, with a trading volume of 212 million shares.[1]

The index transitioned from a system where a company's weighting is based on the total number of shares outstanding (commonly called the float) to a weighting based on the number of shares available for trading (called the free float). This transition took place in three phases starting in October 2005 and being completed in June 2006. Although the change is a technicality, it had a significant effect on the weighting of many companies in the index because many companies in Japan have significant holds of shares of their business partners as a part of intricate business alliances, and such shares will no longer be included in calculating the weight of companies in the index.
