rarely, torr

[Etymology: E. Torricelli; Italy 1608-47] pressure For gases, particularly the atmosphere; designed to equate with the millimetre of mercury (see head of liquid) but to have a precise value for the standard atmosphere, it is thus defined as 101325/760 Pa = 13.585 53~ Pa. An SI-deprecated unit. (The spelling tor was used briefly for the pascal itself.)

An upstanding mass of rocks or boulders which rises above the gentler slopes which surround it. Tors are thought to have been formed by frost shattering in periglacial conditions. This theory is disputed by those who maintain that tors form underground during the deep weathering typical of tropical areas. In this case, the tors are first formed before the overburden is eroded away to reveal the boulders. According to these theories tors are examples of relict landforms. Tors are found on granites from Dartmooor, UK, to the Asir Highlands of Saudi Arabia.
