Total Drama Island is a Canadian animated television series which lampoons the conventions commonly found in reality shows. It premiered on the Canadian cable television specialty channel Teletoon on July 8, 2007. The show was created by the creators of 6teen, another Teletoon program. It was the third Cartoon Network show outside of Adult Swim and Toonami to have the U.S. rating of "TV-PG-D", and a parental-guidance warning after every commercial break and at the beginning of the show (the first two being Sunday Pants and IGPX; its rating in Canada for most episodes is "G", or else "PG"). On the Cartoon Network airing in the United States, some content has been removed from the episodes by censors in order to keep the rating open to a younger audience; for example, putting in words instead of long bleeps, for the episodes "That's Off the Chain" and "Trial by Tri-Armed Triathlon". On the original trailer for the show from Cartoon Network, the original rating was TV-PG-DLS, but when edited, the highest rating an episode received was TV-PG-D.

The series is a reality show parody where twenty-two teens settle at Camp Wawanakwa—a fictional island located in an unspecified area in Muskoka, Ontario. The plot is somewhat like Survivor and Endurance, with social and living environments similar to The Real World. At times, the show also spoofs elements of Fear Factor and Iron Chef. Every three days, the campers must participate in the challenge which normally has at least one winner for their team that met the qualifications of the challenge and gave their team invincibility. The losing team (up until the point where the teams are disbanded) is called to the campfire at night, where Chris (the host) passes out marshmallows. Those who receive a marshmallow get to stay, while the one who does not get a marshmallow has been voted off the island, and must walk down the Dock of Shame to the Boat of Losers, which will take them away and they will "never, never, never, ever, ever, ever, come back, EVER". About halfway through the competition, the teams are disbanded which means it is every camper for themselves and the winner of the challlenge only gets invincibility for. This process of elimination continues on until one player remains on the island. At the end of the series, the last contestant will win a $100,000 prize.
The Total Drama Island cast consists of the host Chris Maclean, the chef, Chef Hatchet, and the twenty-two teens that make up the contestants. The contestants are split into two groups of eleven: the "Screaming Gophers" and the "Killer Bass". The contestants personify various teenage and reality show stereotypes, such as "the delinquent" (Duncan), "overachiever" (Courtney), "surfer chick" (Bridgette), "the cool guy" (Trent), "the gothic girl" (Gwen), "the fat boy" (Owen), "the crazy girl" (Izzy), "Queen Bee" (Heather), "wannabee" (Beth), "dumb blonde" (Lindsay), "party boy" (Geoff), "the male model" (Justin), "nerd" (Harold), "High IQ (Noah)", "insepretable bff's (Katie & Sadie), "sassy chick" (Leshawna), "homeschooled freak" (Ezekiel), "tough girl" (Eva), "talentless jock" (Tyler), "geek" (Cody), and "teddy bear" (DJ), ".
Total Drama Island was developed, financed and produced by Fresh TV. The series was animated at Elliott Animation. The series was directed by Todd Kaufman and Mark Thornton. It is primarily targeted at eight- to thirteen-year-olds, and the creators, Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch, studied what pre-teens liked and disliked about reality television shows in the writing process.[4] Fresh TV Inc. partners McGillis, Pertsch, Elliott and Irving produced the series.[5] The budget for the series was $8 million.[6] It was animated in Flash,[7] at Elliott Animation's studio in Toronto.[5] As with many other Teletoon series, Total Drama Island has also been dubbed into Quebec French prior to its release. Every cast and crew member on Total Drama Island had to sign a confidentiality agreement not to tell who the winner was.[8] All the characters were designed by Kauffman.[9] An early name for the series was Camp TV.[10]
Various voice actors on 6teen have also lent their voice for Total Drama Island: Christian Potenza as Chris Maclean, Julia Chantrey as Eva; Drew Nelson as Duncan; Megan Fahlenbock as Gwen; Adam Reid as Justin; Stephanie Anne Mills as Lindsay and Katie; and Rachel Wilson as Heather. The aforementioned voice actors (Christian Potenza, Megan Fahlenbock, Adam Reid, Stephanie Anne Mills and Rachel Wilson) play the roles of Jude, Jen, Wayne, Kirsten, and a recent crush of Jude's named Melinda Wilson on 6teen. Emilie-Claire Barlow plays a recurring role as Chrissy on 6teen and plays Courtney on Total Drama Island.[11]

Total Drama Island Interactive was an online game marketed in conjunction with the television series. It is produced by Xenophile Media. Development of the site was done largely by Toronto based Jam3media. By registering a free account, the player could play games to earn points for marshmallows. Marshmallows are used as money in the game so the player can buy various items. The top 22 players at the end of the season were entered into a draw, where one of the players had their character in the game make a cameo appearance in the finale [as an intern] (ultimately testing out a part of the ending obstacle course, and falling into a river)[12] The games were based on the challenges in the show, and were updated weekly as new episodes aired.[12]

* This camper wasn't shown at the campfire ceremony for this episode (a goof in the episode).
** In these episodes, it wasn't shown who got the first marshmallow or there wasn't a campfire ceremony one in that episode.
1 No one was voted off in these episodes.
2 Izzy and Eva returned in episode 15 to compete after being voted off.
3 This camper was the only one to receive invincibility even though there was more than one actual winner meeting the qualifications of the challenge.
4 In episode 20, Gwen won invincibility, but oddly, she received the final marshmallow (possibly a goof in the episode since people).
5 These episodes had no winners.
6 Courtney technically did not meet the qualifications in Total Drama Drama Drama Drama Island (TDDDDI) but was able to advance to the next season to become a cast-mate of Total Drama Action due to winning a lawsuit against the producers.
7 There was a bonfire ceremony in this episode, but the one eliminated was Mr. Coconut, who isn't an active contestant.
8 Courtney was voted off because Harold cheated by inserting more votes against her.
Total Drama Action is the second season of Total Drama Island. Chris Maclean returns as the host, and Chef Hatchet returns as the chef. The show takes place on an abandoned film studio back lot, where the contestants will stay for six weeks, competing in various movie genre-themed challenges for one million dollars. The losers take the Red Carpet Walk of Shame to the Lame-o-sine and leave Total Drama Action forever. There are fourteen returning contestants from the first season: Beth, Bridgette, DJ, Duncan, Geoff, Gwen, Harold, Heather, Izzy (E-Scope/Explosivo/Esquire), Justin, LeShawna, Lindsay, Owen, and Trent. Cody, Eva, Ezekiel, Katie, Noah, Sadie and Tyler do not return to compete, but they appear in a talk-show segment, TDA Aftermath. Courtney, who was initially not slated to compete on the show either, eventually makes her return as a contestant as of the episode "Ocean's Eight - or Nine" following a successful lawsuit against TDI's producers, stemming from the circumstances of her elimination in the first season. The show premiered in Canada on January 11, 2009 and on June 11, 2009 in the United States.
A DVD was released by Cartoon Network on August 18, 2009 in the United States. It contains all of the 27 episodes of this series (including the Reunion Special) in a 4 disc set, being 594 minutes long. There are currently no plans to release the DVD in other countries.
Cartoon Network has broadcast the show in many parts of Europe due to the Pan-European feed. Jetix has been broadcasting the show in The Netherlands, and UK.
