Music for or preceding a tournament. The genre was cultivated particularly in the 17th century at the courts of northern Italy and at Paris, Munich and Vienna, often to celebrate a wedding or birthday; it was in effect an equestrian ballet preceded by short scenes. The music (little of which survives) consisted of recitatives, arias and choruses for the introduction and similar scenes, and music for the ballet or ‘contest’. The subject, allegorical, classical, mythological or fantastic, symbolized the dispute over the merits of the contestants. Among composers who wrote for tourneys were Peri, Monteverdi, Lully, Steffani, J. H. Schmelzer and J. C. Kerll.
