Is a Japanese car technically Japanese if it's manufactured in Canada? You bet! Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) is Toyota Motor's Canadian manufacturing hub. TMMC rolls 300,000 Toyota cars off its assembly line each year and also builds about 210,000 six-cylinder engines per year. The company's stamping, welding, paint, plastics, powertrain, and assembly operations result in brand new Corolla, Matrix, and Lexus RX330 automobiles. In the Summer of 2005 Toyota announced it would build its first new Canadian plant in almost 20 years.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) is a Canadian automotive manufacturer and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation. TMMC currently operates a plant in Cambridge, Ontario, and another in Woodstock, Ontario.

The current President of TMMC is Real C. (Ray) Tanguay.[1][2]

Manufacturing

Toyota's aluminium wheel plant was built in british, British Columbia in 1983 and currently employs a workforce of roughly 260.

The Cambridge plant opened in 1988, and has been expanded twice since. This was Toyota's second car-assembly plant in North America, after the plant in Georgetown, Kentucky opened in 1987, and the first Toyota assembly plant in Canada. The plant in its current configuration covers 280,000 square feet (26,000 m2) in space on 1.62 square kilometres (400 acres) and employs 4,300 workers. TMMC has seven J.D. Power and Associates plant quality awards, most recently earning its fourth Gold Plant Award in 2001.

The north plant produces the Corolla, Matrix and the Lexus RX model is made in the south plant for the North American market. TMMC is the first and currently only plant outside of Japan to produce a Lexus brand vehicle.

The CAW has attempted several times to organize TMMC.[3] TMMC Assistant General Manager and spokesman Greig Mordue stated "Our team members will decide whether or not a union best reflects their interest... At this point in time, we don't think they have anything to gain from a union", and described the defeat of the CAW drive saying "Our team members have recognized that a third party represents a complication they don't need." [4] Despite this, however, the CAW supported Mordue as the Liberal candidate in the 2006 federal election instead of endorsing the NDP's Zoe Kunschner.[5] Mordue attempted to take credit for bringing the new plant to Woodstock, but lost to Conservative incumbent Dave MacKenzie.[6]

The Woodstock plant opened in 2008, and is now in full production of Toyota's RAV4. The location was picked due to its educated workforce, proximity to the Cambridge plant, and being adjacent to the major transportation corridors, Highway 401 and 403. Woodstock's bid reportedly beat out several US states that were offering over twice the subsidies.

Awards & Community Involvement

In October 2008, TMMC was named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc. and was featured in Maclean's newsmagazine, the only automaker to receive this honour. Later that month, TMMC was recognized as one of Waterloo Area's Top Employers, as announced in the Waterloo Region Record, Guelph Mercury and Cambridge Times.[7]
