Trail of the Cigarette

  • Release Year: 1920
  • Run Time: 5rl minutes

Plot

At a masked ball, Jessica Dale (Vera Grosse) is found murdered. The only evidence is an engraved cigarette found by the girl's body. Suspicion falls on two men, Edward Clive (Eugene Acker) and Lane Bates (David Wall), both of whom are in love with the hostess of the party, Hortense Ames (Ethel Russell). Because he smokes the same type of cigarette as the one found by the body, Clive is charged and thrown into jail. Hortense is desperate and calls on Tex, the famed criminologist (Glenn White), to solve the crime. Tex's thorough investigation narrows his hunt down to one man, Henry Jevons (Stanley Walpole), who is the secretary to Clive. Jessica's bite marks are found on Jevons' hand, and he is revealed to be a thief in addition to a murderer. Clive is cleared and is reunited with Hortense. This whodunit was the fourth in a series of mystery films collectively called Tex, the Elucidator of Mysteries and released by the now-forgotten Arrow Company. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide
