"Train of Consequences" was the first single from Megadeth's 1994 album, Youthanasia. The song reached #29 on the Billboard US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and #22 in the UK. Its music video received significant airplay on MTV, debuting during the Halloween special, Night of the Living Megadeth, which coincided with the album's release date of October 31, 1994. The single, which helped make Youthanasia the band's fifth consecutive platinum album, includes "Crown of Worms" (later released on the remastered version of Megadeth's previous album Countdown to Extinction), which was co-written by Diamond Head's former vocalist Sean Harris, as its B-side and two other Megadeth songs recorded live at The Cow Palace, San Francisco, California December 4 1992. The 12" version came with a live version of Holy Wars...The Punishment Due recorded from the same show. The Holland version of the single had the most tracks with Black Curtains as an additional B-side and a live recording of Ashes in Your Mouth and included a Megadeth sticker.
Lyrically, "Train of Consequences" deals with the destructive habit of gambling. The song was recorded in a live format rather than layer recording. Although the harmonica solo in the latter half of the song was probably recorded at a later stage. Live recording technique can be considerably more difficult as all band members must nail each of their respective parts perfectly in a take. If something should go amiss the band has to re-take and do it all over. It is reported that 'Train of Consequences' took 42 takes to nail the song as we hear it on Youthanasia.
