Shortened from the previous name which meant 'City of Waves'. A seaport at the mouth of the River Trang during the Ayutthaya period, c.1860 it was moved inland by Mongkut (1804–68) (posthumously Rama IV), King of Siam (1851–68), because of frequent flooding.
