Translucent reminds listeners why post-rock was first considered a revival of Krautrock. The spirit of early Faust is everywhere in the Land of Nod's music, from the light psychedelic overtones of "Luminosity" and "Quadrant Zero" to the hypnotic rhythms of "Exponential No. 2" and "Objective Reality." In the latter two, the music comes very close to turning into space rock. The clean electric guitar sound and the ambient miking of the drums remind listeners that the CD was recorded in the late '90s and belongs to the post-rock style. Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Stars of the Lid come to mind, but this group's music is simpler, cleaner, and more accessible than either of them. Translucent offers a varied selection of tracks, including a couple of numbers that are more experimental, like "Missing Mass," with layers of synthesizers and backward samples. But don't burn brain cells over this CD. It is meant to be listened to as background music and works well as such. You won't come out of it with any particular melody sticking around in your head, but any fan of the genre should feel satisfied.
