Impaired hearing caused by interference with passage of sound waves through the external ear (for example, interference caused by wax) or middle ear (for example, interference caused by otitis media, aerotitis media, or otosclerosis). May be characterized by greater interference with hearing of low tones. Hearing aids that amplify may be helpful.
