Biography

School chums Chris Brown and Peter Charell absorbed the heavy rock sound of Korn, Soundgarden, and Metallica during the mid-'90s. Both were music geeks and naturally flirted with the idea of getting a group together. Casual gigs in school motivated them even more, leaving Brown and Charell to design what would become Trapt. In 1997, fellow guitarist Simon Ormandy joined the band. The trio recorded its own demo and landed gigs in and around the suburbs of southern California. Within a year, Trapt were opening up for the likes of Papa Roach, Dredg, and Spike 1000, but high-school graduation loomed ahead.

Trapt's second album, Amalgamation, was self-released in 1998, but the band's dynamic was shifting. Ormandy and Brown were attending classes at UC Santa Barbara by fall 1999 while Charell was several hours away at UC Santa Cruz. The band met up on weekends for rehearsals and shows, and also managed to issue another record, Glimpse, in early 2000 with hopes that a record label would notice. As luck would have it, Trapt impressed those at the Immortal label after a stellar gig at the Troubadour one evening in late 2000. Talks of a deal were in the works, but Immortal dropped the band after eight weeks.

Each member eventually dropped out of school and moved to Los Angeles to focus solely on Trapt. Seattle native Aaron Montgomery joined to play drums, and after a 9/11 benefit show, Warner Bros. offered the band a deal in late 2001. A year later, Trapt prepared their proper debut, and a self-titled EP appeared in spring 2004. The band returned in 2005 with Someone in Control. A live album released in 2007 -- simply titled Live -- was their first for Nikki Sixx's Eleven Seven label. A year later they teamed with producer GGGarth Richardson for their third studio album, Only Through the Pain. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Band history

Formation and early years

The members of Trapt met in high school in the mid-'90's and shortly developed an act with Chris Taylor Brown on vocals, Rick Sanders and Simon Ormandy playing guitar, Peter Charell on bass and David Stege playing the drums. The band's first few rehearsals were in guitarist Simon Ormandy's guest-house, which had a party-like atmosphere with its loft overlooking the living room.[2] In 1997, they recorded their first CD, Amalgamation, which they sold when they played at local venues. The band received a great response and a positive buzz soon started to grow. In 1998, before the band had graduated high school, they were already opening for acts like Papa Roach.[3][4]

Mainstream success

The band proceeded to sign with Warner Bros. Records and started recording their debut album, with the help of Robin Diaz replacing Stege on the drums (Diaz was eventually replaced by their current drummer, Aaron Montgomery). Meanwhile, they also moved to Vancouver, Canada to base their recording operations. On November 5, 2002 the band released their self-titled album, Trapt, which produced a total of three singles. "Headstrong" was the first, and it reached #1 on both the Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, as well as #16 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking their most successful single to date, and becoming the theme song for WWE Bad Blood during June 2003. The second single from the album, "Still Frame", also managed to achieve #1 spot on the US Mainstream Rock chart, and a respectable #3 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The third single, "Echo" (whose video had an appearance from Michelle Trachtenberg) peaked at #10 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The Trapt album was certified platinum by the RIAA. Although not a single, the last song on the album, "New Beginning", was featured in the Dragonball Z film, "Return of Cooler".

Later years

The next release by the band after their debut album was a three-track EP, released March 30, 2004, that included live versions of the "Made of Glass" and "Echo" tracks, as well as a previously unheard track called "Promise".

Their second full length album titled "Someone In Control", was released September 13, 2005. It produced three singles for the band, "Stand Up", "Waiting", and "Disconnected (Out of Touch)". While the singles didn't do as well as the ones released from the first album, "Stand Up" still reached #3 on the US Mainstream Rock chart (note: iTunes has "Lost Realist" listed as the song's name).

Their live album titled Trapt Live!, was released September 18, 2007. The album featured two new studio songs ("Stay Alive" and "Everything to Lose") as well as live versions of nine songs from their earlier records. On March 7, 2008, it was announced that lead guitarist Simon Ormandy had parted ways with the band. He was replaced by Robb Torres.[5] Despite rumors indicating otherwise, Ormandy's departure was amicable, and vocalist, Chris Brown, continues to speak highly of Ormandy to the media, while promoting Torres as the new guitarist.[6] On March 8, 2008, Trapt released "Who's Going Home with You Tonight?" on the band's website, a song from their upcoming studio album entitled Only Through the Pain.[7] The band also posted four other songs from this upcoming album, "Black Rose", "Contagious", "Wasteland", and "Ready When You Are". On April 15, 2008, Trapt announced they would be touring as part of Mötley Crüe's Crüe Fest along with Buckcherry, Papa Roach and Sixx:A.M.. The tour began July 1, 2008 in West Palm Beach, Florida.[8]

On June 10, 2008, Trapt released "Who's Going Home with You Tonight?" as a single. They also recorded a music video for the song.[9] It was announced on June 27, 2008 that "Who's Going Home with You Tonight?" will be part of the weekly downloadable content for Harmonix's Video Game "Rock Band". The content was released on July 1, 2008. Only Through the Pain was released on August 5, 2008. Trapt toured in support of Only Through the Pain by opening for Hinder on the Jägermeister Music Tour with Rev Theory. In March 2009, Trapt started the Contagious Tour, also featuring Red, Halestorm, Inept and Since October at several shows. "Contagious", the second single off of Only Through the Pain, is available as a free playable track in the iPhone and iPod Touch game Tap Tap Revenge 2.
