Travel time

Travel time may refer to

• in physics the travel time of light or a radio waves from a transmitter to a receiver, due to the signals propagation speed. It can be used for distance measurement and ranging, e.g. by GPS or radar. The propagation speed depends on the refractivity of the medium,

• in electronics the amount of time it takes for an electrical signal or a certain number of bytes to be transferred over a medium, see propagation delay.
• in acoustics and seismology the travel time of sound, ultrasound or vibrations from a source to a receiver. The signal propagation speed depends on the density of medium and its elasticity. The distance measurement is called Sonar.
