Review

Another fabulous collection of treasures from Duke Reid's Treasure Isle treasure chest, stuffed with classic rocksteady. And, in fact, this is one-half of the now deleted two-CD compilation Duke Reid's Treasure Chest. Several of the offerings will be familiar to even novice fans, including the Paragon's classic "Tide Is Hide" and the Techniques' masterpiece "Queen Majesty." Another familiar number is "Loving Pauper," a smash for Gregory Isaacs, but here we find Dobby Dobson's emotive original hit. DJ hero U-Roy does a fabulous version of "Midnight Hour," which is considerately placed right after the Silvertones' cover that U-Roy versioned. DJ Honey Boy Martin is best known for his taking on the mighty Judge Dread on "Tougher Than Tough"; here he shouts out to an acquaintance on the exuberant "Hey Leroy," set to a scintillating Latin-flavored instrumental. In contrast is the more laid-back "Soul Style" credited to the Duke Reid Group, a pseudonym for Tommy McCook and the Supersonics, whose sublime sound was the power behind Treasure Isle. But it was the vocalists that sold the songs, singers like the fabulous Alton Ellis, whose duet with Lloyd Williams is one of the album highlights, the Melodians, whose two offerings are both much versioned classics, and the always wonderful Phyllis Dillon. Superb singers, sublime harmonies, a sensational backing band together add up to unforgettable songs, and this compilation features a host of them. Who wouldn't be in the mood for that? ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide
