Treaty of Lisbon

(1668)

The Treaty of Lisbon was signed on February 13, 1668 between Afonso VI of Portugal and Carlos II of Spain, by mediation of Charles II of England. Based on the terms of the treaty, Spain finally recognized the independence of Portugal and the legitimity of its monarch. Moreover, Spain gave up any further attempts to incorporate the Portuguese into the Spanish Empire. In return for these concessions, Portugal yielded Ceuta to Spain. This treaty ended the 26 year-long Portuguese Restoration War.
