The doctrine of the Christian church that each of three persons (the father, the son, and the holy ghost) is God, and yet that there are not three Gods (tritheism) but one. The doctrine teeters on the brink of contradiction, or perhaps beyond it, and has occasioned much reflection on notions such as substance, identity, and person. It is denied by Unitarians, who regard Jesus purely as a human person.
