Biography

Pierceton, Indiana garage band the Troup was formed in mid-1966 by singer/guitarist Amauro "Moe" Obregon and his brother bassist Art, together veterans of a series of short-lived groups including "Moe's Combo, 007" and "DeArMos." Moe Obregon also played in the group TreMendez, making his recorded debut on their single "Wild Free." The Obregons recruited organist Lyle Porter and drummer Dave Wake to complete the Troup lineup, touring the north central Indiana region on the strength of an energetic live set comprised primarily of frat rock classics like "Louie Louie" and "Hang On, Sloopy." At an outdoor barbecue, they even backed future country star Janie Fricke. In late 1967, the Troup traveled to Chicago for their first and only recording date, armed with three original songs penned by fellow Piercetonite Dennis Puckett, who also played guitar on the session. Two singles -- the first boasting the Obregon brothers' lone original composition, "I'm Going Away," as its A-side, the other featuring the Puckett tune "Jungle Jive" -- were simultaneously released in early 1968 on the Troup's own RTB label, so named in honor of the Obregon's employer, Ralph T. Brower, who bankrolled the studio session. Sporting a British Invasion-influenced sound that reflected no trace of the psychedelic rock then in vogue, the singles went largely unnoticed, and when Moe Obregon and Dave Wake were drafted for military duty soon after, the Troup ground to a halt. The Obregons later formed another group, "the Traces", but never again recorded.
