Biography

The son of actress Jane Fonda and political activist Tom Hayden, Troy Garity has shown interest in both of his parents' professions. (He adopted the surname Garity from his paternal grandmother's side.) As a child, he spent his summers at the Laurel Springs Arts Camp in Santa Barbara and appeared uncredited in On Golden Pond with his mom and grandfather. As an adult, he moved to New York City to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and later to Los Angeles to start a film career. After being named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in 1998, he landed the role of his father in Steal This Movie, the historical biopic starring Vincent D'Onofrio as '60s activist Abbie Hoffman. The next year, Garity appeared in Barry Levinson's crime comedy Bandits as a getaway driver for eccentric bank robbers played by Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton. After a few more small-time features, he played token white guy Isaac Rosenberg in Tim Story's urban comedy Barbershop. His breakthrough role came in 2003 with the Showtime movie A Soldier's Girl, based on a true story. He played Pfc. Barry Winchell, a soldier who was beaten to death in 1999 after he fell in love with transsexual Calpernia Addams (Lee Pace). The job earned Garity nominations from both the Golden Globes and the Independent Spirit Awards. the actor starred in the critically acclaimed drama Milwaukee, Minnesota that same year as mentally disabled ice fisherman Albert Burroughs. Troy O'Donovan Garity (born Troy O'Donovan Hayden on July 7, 1973) is an American film actor. He is best known for his role as "Isaac Rosenberg" in the Barbershop films.

Early life and education

Troy O'Donovan Garity was born in Los Angeles, California to actress Jane Fonda and activist/politician Tom Hayden. He grew up in Santa Monica.[1]

His parents named him after two resistance leaders, Nguyen Van Troi and O'Donovan Rossa. His surname, Garity, is the family name of his paternal grandmother and used for the sake of anonymity.[2]

Garity began acting as a child at Santa Barbara’s Laurel Springs Camp for the Arts where he performed commedia del arte. He made an uncredited appearance in the film On Golden Pond.[2]

Garity trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He also became a member of the Academy Repertory Company, performing in a number of stage productions.[2]

Family

Along with his half-sister Vanessa Vadim and cousin Bridget Fonda, Garity is a member of the third generation of one of Hollywood's most famous acting families. His mother, Jane Fonda, and uncle Peter Fonda are the children of Henry Fonda and New York socialite Frances Ford Seymour.[3]

His heritage is Italian and Dutch descent through his maternal grandfather, Irish, French and German through his maternal grandmother and Irish on his father's side of the family.[3][4][5]

Career

Garity has appeared in numerous film productions.

He played his father in the 2000 film Steal This Movie based on the life of Yippie founder Abbie Hoffman.

His portrayal of 'Isaac Rosenberg' in the 2002 film Barbershop proved to be his breakout role and he reprised it inBarbershop 2: Back in Business.

Garity also starred as Harvey in the Danny Boyle/Alex Garland film Sunshine.

In 1998, Garity was named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People.[2]

In 2003, he played Barry Winchell in the film Soldier's Girl and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Mini-series or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

Personal life

Troy is married to former Mercer Bar manager and party planner Simone Bent. Jane Fonda meddled in the relationship and picked out the engagement ring and later bragged about doing so to reporters.[6]

Garity is the founder of the Peace Process Network, an international gang violence prevention coalition,[2] and he is the chairman of Homies Unidos, a gang violence prevention group in L.A.[1]
