Trust Company

Investment Dictionary: Trust Company

A legal entity that acts as fiduciary, agent or trustee on behalf of a person or business entity for the purpose of administration, management and the eventual transfer of assets to a beneficial party. The entity acts as a custodian for trusts, estates, custodial arrangements, asset management, stock transfer, beneficial ownership registration and other related arrangements. A trust company does not own the assets its customers assign to its management, but it may assume some legal obligation to take care of assets on behalf of other parties.

Investopedia Says:

A trust company or trust department is usually a division or an associated company of a commercial bank. Trusts and similar arrangements managed for eventual transfer are managed for profit, which may be taken out of the assets on an annual basis or upon transfer to the beneficial third party. There are often tax advantages associated with using trusts to transfer ownership of assets, but any trust arrangement should be made through qualified professionals that are capable of giving tax and legal advice.

Biography

Alternative metal outfit Trust Company (also referred to as TRUSTcompany and TRUST*CO) formed in Montgomery, AL, circa 1997 around Kevin Palmer (vocals/guitar) and Jason Singleton (drums). The two met after high school, initially playing in a local band together before breaking off to create their own group. Distinguishing themselves from the alt-rock pack in their merger of melody with guitar-driven metal, the group took influence from the likes of Pantera, the Smashing Pumpkins, and the Deftones. With Josh Moates on bass, the band played for three years as a trio; they recruited second guitarist James Fukai in 2000. Self-described as weekend warriors who refused to play covers, the guys played wherever people would have them, aptly covering the Southeast (and as far west as Texas) in their efforts to get noticed and get signed.

Eventually hooking up with Dcide Records, Trust Company later found themselves on the roster at Geffen. Originally called 41 Down, the band would change its name to Trust Company prior to releasing its debut full-length to avoid confusion with Canadian pop-punkers Sum 41. The Lonely Position of Neutral appeared in mid-2002 and produced two moderately successful singles, "Downfall" and "Running from Me." Tours with bands like Korn, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Papa Roach followed, and the album was eventually certified gold. Trust Company followed up three years later with True Parallels, and supporting tours marked the debut of new bassist Walker Warren. Palmer exited the group in August 2005 for personal reasons; the band broke up soon afterward. Palmer and Moates went on to form Amity Lane with Palmer's wife, Layla, while Fukai turned his attention to the instrumental metal group Hematovore. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

History

First run (1997–2005)

Formed in 1997, Trust Company came together through vocalist Kevin Palmer and drummer Jason Singleton, who briefly played drums in the Ed Kemper Trio. Originally called 41 Down, the band then recruited bassist Josh Moates and guitarist James Fukai. After building a local fan-base, the band went on to sign a major label deal with Geffen Records. The band then changed their name to Trust Company to avoid confusion with the Canadian band Sum 41.

The group released their debut album, The Lonely Position of Neutral, on July 23, 2002. The album was well received with the lead single "Downfall" gaining heavy exposure through MTV2. Subsequently, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts. A second single "Running From Me" followed with more moderate success. The Lonely Position was certified gold by the RIAA, and the band went on to tour with artists such as 30 Seconds to Mars and Papa Roach. They also toured with KoRn and Disturbed as part of the Pop Sux Tour in 2002.

Trust Company was scheduled to play at Ozzfest 2003 but was forced to back out by their label in order to work on their second album, True Parallels, which was belatedly released on March 22, 2005, after an 8-10 month delay. Several months prior to the album's release, original bassist Josh Moates left the group and was replaced by Walker Warren. Despite little promotion from their label, the album entered the Billboard album charts at #32, and has gone on to sell in excess of 200,000 copies. The first and only single from the album, "Stronger," made a moderate impact on mainstream rock radio. According to drummer Jason Singleton on the band's website message board, the second single may have been "The War is Over."

Hiatus (2005–2007)

In August 2005, it was announced that frontman Kevin Palmer had left the band due to personal issues. The band disbanded shortly after. Soon after the breakup, Palmer and original bassist Josh Moates came together to form a new project called Amity Lane. The band released their debut album The Sound of Regret on October 31, 2006 via Corporate Punishment Records.

Jason Singleton played as the drummer for several bands in Montgomery, including Arm in Arms, The Spicolis, and The Escape Frame. James Fukai reunited with his old band, Hematovore, under their indie record label, Acerbic Noise Development.

Reunion and new album (2007–present)

On August 11, 2007, it was announced that the four original members - Kevin Palmer, Josh Moates, Jason Singleton, and James Fukai - were reuniting and have two reunion shows planned in Montgomery, Alabama and that they will be writing and recording a new album for release sometime in 2008. On November 9, 2007 the band headlined what would be considered a reunion show at Seville Quarter in Pensacola, FL.

On March 18, 2008, The band posted 2 new songs on their MySpace page, titled "Waking Up" and "Stumbling". The band stated in a blog that these are demos and may be re-recorded. They later announced that they would be handing out CDs with previously unreleased or rare material from past years at concerts with the purchase of a t-shirt. In June of 2009, Trust Company started recording their 3rd album with record producer Brandon Mashburn at a private studio in Springfield, MO. The album is expected to see a release sometime in 2010.

Josh Moates has chosen to leave the band and has been replaced by Amity Lane touring guitarist, Eric Salter. Moats has since married Deal or No Deal model Aubrey Lemon, and is a photographer in Prattville, Alabama.

The band has now expanded its touring to the east coast, with The Exies as the headlining act.
