English family of bow makers. They include Thomas (fl c1790 - c1830), his son William (fl c1825) and his grandson James (1835-1919). James, who worked first for W. E. Hill and from the 1870s on his own, was a distinguished craftsman. He is said to have made 5000 bows for violin, viola and cello, the best having a broad but delicate head, with narrow chamfer, a plain silver button and face, rectangular frog and mounted with gold and ebony.
