The Pink Panther and
Inspector Clouseau
View Poster
Spotlight: The Pink Panther is 1) Inspector Jacques Clouseau's sidekick, 2) a valuable diamond, 3) Inspector Clouseau's archenemy. If you guessed #2, you're right. The Pink Panther was a diamond stolen in the first of the series of eponymous films starring Peter Sellers. A flaw in the heart of the diamond resembled a leaping panther; hence the name. Friz Freleng, who was born on this date in 1906, and David DePatie created the animated Pink Panther character for the opening credits of the film. Accompanied by Henry Mancini's memorable music, the character became so popular that he eventually starred in his own movie shorts and a Saturday morning television show.
