Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus
Spotlight: Nicolaus Copernicus was born on this date in 1473, in Poland. A church canon, Copernicus had studied canon law, astronomy and mathematics, and he spent a great deal of his time observing the planets and stars. Eventually he came to believe that the sun is the center of the universe and the planets revolve around it. Afraid to be condemned as a heretic, he hesitated to publish his beliefs. His Six Books Concerning the Revolutions of the Heavenly Orbs, presenting the Copernican system, was published just hours before he died in 1543.
Quote: "To know that we know what we know, and to know that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge." Nicolaus Copernicus
