| Rudolf Virchow |
Who coined the term "embolism"? The founder of the school of cellular pathology was a medical scientist, anthropologist and politician named Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow. Born on this date in 1821, Virchow pioneered the concept of social medicine, believing that social and economic conditions have a direct impact on medical conditions and that disease must be combated across the spectrum of the population, through both medical and social strategies. Many medical terms are named for Virchow, including a method of autopsy. He came up with the word "embolism" to describe the blocking of a blood vessel by emboli which have been transported by blood circulation from another part of the body. The Society for Medical Anthropology gives an annual award in Virchow's name, the Rudolph Virchow Award.
