Biography

Sort of a more rakish, English version of young American pop singers like Jason Mraz, Justin Timberlake, and Gavin DeGraw, East London roustabout Tyler James made a name for himself since debuting with the buoyant, R&B-flavored single "Why Do I Do?" in 2004. His journey actually started in 2001, but record company monkey business prevented James from getting his shot until a 2004 deal with Island Records and the infectious "Why Do I Do?" A few more singles followed, including "Just Around the Corner," "Nothing," and a cover of White Town's clever 1997 hit "Your Woman." Though it was pushed back a few times, James' Unlikely Lad LP was still scheduled for a 2005 release. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Career

After guesting on the underground R&B track "Wilder" by Norwegian producers Stargate in 2001, which became a nightclub favourite in London, James got his first taste of celebrity. In 2002, after touring around the UK's bars, pubs and clubs; evolving his sound and performance, James had garnered enough reputation to be hailed as "The British answer to Justin Timberlake" by The Face magazine, whilst NME hailed him as "one to watch".[citation needed]

Tyler was signed to Island in 2003 after they heard a demo tape featuring his future debut single, "Why Do I Do". In late 2004, the reggae flavoured, "Why Do I Do", made the 'A' playlist on BBC Radio 2, and entered the UK Singles Chart at #25.[1]

James resurfaced in the spring of 2005 with "Foolish" which reached #16 on the UK chart.[1] The success of the song saw his first appearance on BBC Television's Top of the Pops.

In July 2005, James' third single was released. Originally a #1 hit for White Town in 1997, James covered "Your Woman". In late August 2005, James performed at the V Festival. "Your Woman" reached #60, whilst his album The Unlikely Lad was released as a digital download in August 2005. James was dropped by Island Records that year.
