(b Dresden, 6 Oct 1943). German composer. He was a chorister in the Dresden Kreuzchor, studied there and under Kochan in Berlin, and worked as producer with the Dresden Staatsoper. His works, which have a strong dramatic element and are noted for clarity of structure and the occasional use of serial and aleatory techniques, include orchestral works ( Dramatic Impression on the Death of J.F. Kennedy, solo cello, 1963; Timpani Concerto, 1965; Choreographien nach Degas, 1972; Sinfonia come un grande lamento, 1977) as well as chamber music, songs (including settings of Neruda) and several operas, notably Die weisse Rose (1967, rev. 1986), Levins Mühle (1973) and Die Wundersame Schustersfrau (1982).
