Irish Literature Companion:

Uilliam Nuinseann

Nuinseann, Uilliam (William Nugent) (1550-1625), poet; brother of Christopher Nugent, 9th Baron of Delvin, Co. Westmeath, who prepared an Irish primer for Elizabeth I. He studied at Oxford, but after returning to Ireland he was suspected of treason and fled north, where he had the protection of the O'Neills and Maguires. ‘Diombáidh triall ó thulchaibh Fáil’, a poem of exile, collected by Charlotte Brooke in Reliques of Ancient Irish Poetry (1789), is attributed to him.
