Asian Mythology:

Ukemochi

Ukemochi is the Japanese Shinto (see Shinto entries) goddess of food. According to the Nihongi (see Nihongi), the goddess was created by the first parent gods Izanagi and Izanami (see Izanagi and Izanami) and was sent down to Earth by the sun goddess Amaterasu (see Amaterasu). It is said that boiled rice poured forth from her mouth when she faced the land, seafood when she faced the sea, and game when she faced the mountains. She served up her food first to the moon god Tsukiyomi (see Tsukiyomi). The moon god was disgusted by being fed things that had come from the mouth of the goddess, so he killed his hostess. In anger, Amaterasu refused to look at him again, so to this day the Sun and Moon avoid each other. But out of the dead body of Ukemochi came all of the things that humans now eat.
