  1. The disappearance of the image of an extremely distant galaxy when viewed through an ultraviolet filter, caused by the absorption of ultraviolet rays by intergalactic hydrogen gas.
  2. A technique that identifies extremely distant galaxies that are not visible through ultraviolet filters by the comparative analysis of images viewed through red, green, and ultraviolet filters.
