Biography

Los Angeles was a key capital on the tiny corner of the early hip-hop map known as electro, and Uncle Jamm's Army were one of the primary reasons for that. An extended crew of producers, DJs, and vocalists including Ice-T, Egyptian Lover, the Unknown DJ, and Chris "The Glove" Taylor, Uncle Jamm's Army released a string of popular, influential electro cuts during 1984-1986, including "What's Your Sign," "Dial-a-Freak," and "Yes, Yes, Yes," all for the Freak Beat label. Notable for their all-around musicality; driving, effective rhythms; and uncompromising attitude, Uncle Jamm's Army remain one of the most important pieces in the old-school electro puzzle and have influenced scores of new-school electro producers, from Autechre to I-F. ~ Sean Cooper, All Music Guide

History

Originally known as the Unique Dream Entertainment, the group was formed in 1978 by original members Roger Clayton and Gid Martin. Clayton and martin were friends that met in high school, and became a set of DJs on the West Coast. They, along with Alonzo Williams, were among the earliest hip hop DJs on the West Coast and helped to bring the electro scene there.

During mid-1980, Uncle Jamm's Army had grown to be the #1 dance and party promoters in Los Angeles, selling "standing room only" attendances (4th of July Groove, Shake Your Pants, and Labor Day Groove) at the Alpine Village dancehall in Torrance, California.

By 1983, the DJ group expanded further and Clayton and Martin recruited underground DJs and MCs who were creating a cult following. The most well-known being Ice-T, who was later a gangsta rap pioneer, and others such as DJ Battlecat, Egyptian Lover and DJ Pooh. The group name also would change to the Uncle Jamm's Army. The electronic sound of the group was influential on West Coast hip hop, as G-Funk pioneered by Dr. Dre continued the tradition of an electronic sound in hip hop music.
