1. A coat of paint applied on new wood, or over a primer, or over a previous coat of paint; improves the seal and serves as a base for the topcoat, for which it provides better adhesion.
2. Any paint which acts as a base for enamel.

The fine hairs of an animal's coat which are usually shorter and more numerous than the coarse guard hairs. In some breeds of dogs and cats, however, these may predominate.
