Character creation

Claire E. White asked, "The Jedi Master Luminara Unduli is an unusual and entertaining character. How did you create her character — were you given much guidance as to her?" Alan Dean Foster replied, "No guidance at all. Just a name and a couple of artist's renderings. I wanted to make her as different from the more familiar Jedi as I could without overstepping the bounds I alluded to in the previous question. It's unreasonable, for example, to expect a female Jedi to think exactly like a male Jedi...or an alien one...in every situation."[3]

Background

Luminara Unduli serves in the Jedi Order during the last days of the Old Republic, and rises to the rank of Jedi Master 10 years prior to the Clone Wars. Her Padawan is Barriss Offee; while in battle, they move in tandem, synchronizing every attack.

Unduli is a humanoid female hailing from the planet of Mirial. Her lower lip is stained a permanent purplish-black, and a series of interlocking black diamonds run down her chin while more intricate markings cover her knuckle joints; these tattoos denote her physical discipline. Her eyes are an intense blue, a contrast to her olive-colored skin.

In The Approaching Storm, Unduli and Barriss Offee, together with Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker, are dispatched to the minor world of Ansion to settle a dispute, thus solidifying Ansion's place in the Republic and dissuading them from joining the Separatist movement. Unduli continues to use her diplomatic skills, quick wit, and strength in the Force in the war to come.

The Clone Wars

In Episode II, Unduli fights alongside the Jedi in the Battle of Geonosis. She is one of the few survivors.

As depicted in the Clone Wars series, Unduli takes Offee to the light crystal caves of Ilum to complete her training. After Offee constructs her own lightsaber, the two sense the entrance of the Chameleon Droids into the Jedi Temple. The two succeed in defeating half of the hundreds of droids, but planted mines from the droids nearly destroy the Temple. Yoda helps rescue Unduli and her newly ascended Jedi partner.

After Nute Gunray is captured on Rodia, Luminara and Ahsoka Tano escorts the Separatist leader to trial. The cruiser that they are on is later attacked by Asajj Ventress and battalions of droids in an effort to rescue Gunray. Ventress cripples the ship's engines and kills most of the clones on board.

Luminara believes that she can defeat the assassin alone but is mistaken, and only the timely arrival of Ahsoka Tano saves her from being killed by Ventress. Meanwhile, the Jedi and the clones are betrayed by Captain Argyus, and he and Gunray escape. Luminara later apologizes to Ahsoka for not believing her and realizes her mistakes, before leaving with Commander Gree and briefing Jedi General Kit Fisto on Gunray's possible whereabouts.

In Episode III, Unduli is stationed on the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk along with Quinlan Vos. Order 66 is transmitted to the clone troopers in her squad and she is gunned down by her own clone troopers.
