Unigene Laboratories has a unified focus: peptides. Its core products are based on the two hormones calcitonin and parathyroid hormone (PTH), both natural peptides useful in treating osteoporosis. Unigene has developed a patented process for the efficient production of the peptides and has developed oral and nasal drug delivery technologies. Partner GlaxoSmithKline is developing oral PTH, which is in early-stage clinical trials. Unigene's nasal calcitonin product, branded as Fortical, has won FDA approval; Upsher-Smith Laboratories markets the drug for the US osteoporosis market. Unigene has also licensed its peptide production process to Novartis, allowing the company to produce its own calcitonin.
