United Space Alliance (USA) is a space-race heavyweight (each of the Space Shuttles -- Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour -- weighs 173,000 pounds). A joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Boeing, USA was established in 1996 to consolidate NASA's various Space Shuttle contracts under a single entity. As prime contractor, the company is involved in mission operations, astronaut and flight controller training, flight software development, Shuttle payload integration, and vehicle processing, launch, and recovery operations. USA also provides training and operations planning for the International Space Station. Its main operations are at the Johnson Space Center (Texas) and Kennedy Space Center (Florida).
