The U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, also known as the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is a standing committee of the United States House of Representatives which has jurisdiction over bills and investigations related to the foreign affairs of the United States. It is less powerful than its Senate counterpart, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, because the House committee does not consider the ratification of treaties or the confirmation of presidential appointments, such as are made for ambassador and Secretary of State.
Until his death on February 11, 2008, Representative Tom Lantos of California was the committee's chairman. Howard Berman, also of California, was chosen to replace him.
In January 2007, the Committee reverted from its 1995-2007 name, Committee on International Relations, as the new title (first used in 1822) is more formal and reflective of its Senate counterpart.[1] Jurisdiction remains the same.
