The 2010 United States Senate election in Iowa will take place on November 2, 2010 along other elections to the United States Senate in other states as well as elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. Chuck Grassley, the Republican incumbent, is running for re-election.

Background

Incumbent Chuck Grassley is moderately popular, but his approval ratings have been gradually dropping and his disapproval ratings have been gradually climbing[1]. Although recent polls have suggested that he could be vulnerable, his seat is still regarded as "safe" for the Republicans.[2] He may face a primary challenge.[3] Grassley's staff overruled a possible retirement, saying he is running for reelection.[4] When questioned about a rumor that he might retire from the Senate to run for Governor, Grassley insisted that he is running for reelection, mentioning that he has had 12 fundraisers for reelection.[5]

Three Democrats have announced that they will seek the Democratic nomination thus far. One such challenger, former state representative and Iowa Department of Transportation official Bob Krause, has drawn attention for implying that Grassley had been in office too long, remarking to supporters in Des Moines: "As a good farmer, Sen. Grassley must recognize that 51 years, or 58 years at the end of his term, is a long time to go without rotating crops."[6] Krause and former state senator Tom Fiegen have both cited Grassley's support of deregulating the financial services industry as reasons for running. Krause has said, "Please remember that Farmer Grassley was one that opened the barn door and let the cow out at AIG,"[6] while Fiegen, a bankruptcy lawyer, has made reducing unemployment and tightening regulation of the financial services industry the cornerstones of his campaign.[7]

Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Michael Kiernan has said that he has recruited trial lawyer Roxanne Conlin to challenge Grassley. [8] Kiernan's virtual endorsement of Conlin prior to her announcement [9] has drawn the ire of party members as it is counter to party rules when there is more than one candidate from the party competing in a primary race.
