University of Brighton, formerly Brighton Polytechnic, provides a wide range of academic studies for about 21,000 students. In addition to more technical courses in engineering, IT, medicine (it shares a medical school with the University of Sussex), nursing, and pharmacy, it offers classes in areas such as architecture, art, education, history, languages, and social sciences. The institution dates back to the founding of an art school in 1859, followed by Brighton's Municipal Technical College in 1897 and Teacher Training College in 1909. The technical college and art school merged in 1970 to form Brighton Polytechnic; the teachers college merged into the school in 1976. It became a university in 1992.
