The main public university in Jordan.

The University of Jordan was established in 1962 on a picturesque hillside in the western outskirts of Amman that formerly was the site of an agricultural research station. The university comprises eighteen faculties, including arts, sciences, economics and commerce, shariʿa (Islamic law), medical sciences (including general medicine, nursing, and pharmacy), education, agriculture, engineering and technology, law, and physical education, and as of 2003 boasted 961 faculty members. It awards both undergraduate and graduate diplomas, and also has a teaching hospital. As with all public universities in Jordan, students pay nominal tuition and are able to buy books and materials at subsidized prices. In 2003, the university student population stood at 25,000, eighty-eight percent of which came from Jordan.
