The University of St. Gallen (in German: Universität St. Gallen) is a research university based in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

The University is generally known as HSG, which is an acronym derived from its full name Universität St. Gallen – Hochschule für Wirtschafts-, Rechts- und Sozialwissenschaften. It is also known in English as the University of St. Gallen for Business Administration, Economics, Law and Social Sciences.

Despite being one of the smallest universities in Switzerland, it has the largest business faculty of any Swiss university and is considered to be one of the leading schools for business, economics and public administration in Europe. [1]

The University of St. Gallen is a member of the CEMS and APSIA networks. It is EQUIS[2] and AACSB accredited.[3]

History

The University of St.Gallen (HSG), Switzerland, was founded as a "Business Academy" in 1898 - in the heyday of the St.Gallen embroidery industry - and offered its first lectures in 1899. It is therefore one of the oldest universities of its kind in the world. The HSG continues to pursue the goal of providing students with a practice-oriented education, guided by an integrative view of business, economics, law, and social sciences. With success: the University of St.Gallen has constantly been ranked among the top business schools in Europe. Accreditations by EQUIS and AACSB International underline its commitment to a holistic curriculum that meets the highest academic standards.

In autumn 2009, there were about 6,500 students, 80 tenured professors, 60 assistant professors and senior lecturers, and over 300 lecturers and 300 assistants. [4] The University is financed by the Canton of St. Gallen and other cantons. The laws of the Canton of St. Gallen give the University far-reaching research autonomy.[5]

Campus

The HSG is located on top of Rosenberg hill, overlooking the old town of St. Gallen and the Alps. A remarkable feature is the integration of art and architecture throughout the campus. [6]

In the Main Building, designed by Walter Foerderer [7] and regarded as a significant examplar of 1960s architecture far beyond Switzerland's borders, art tends to play the role of a counterpart to the architecture, whereas in the Library Building of 1989, the works of art complement the diversity of architectural forms in a narrative fashion.

There are works by Burckhardt, Mastroianni, Kemény, Penalba [8], Arp, Braque, Hajdu, Soniatta, Miró, Calder, Soulages, Giacometti, Tàpies, Coghuf, Valentin, Otto Müller, Stahly, Baier, Bodmer, Oertli, Gehr, Gubler, Prantl, Baumgarten, Disler, Bill, Josef Felix Müller, Paladino, Richter, Fabro, and Cucchi.

HSG offers the latest facilities and services to support individual and collaborative learning, including web-based communication platforms and wireless LAN. The library contains around 400,000 bound volumes, some 1,500 journals and a vast selection of e-journals. To keep body and mind in balance a full spectrum of sports activities awaits the students, from aerobics to yoga. The University's attractive location between Lake Constance and the Alps makes St.Gallen an ideal setting for all kinds of leisure activities.

B.A. and M.A. degree programs

A new structure of Studies became operational as of winter 2001/2002. Degrees are now divided into Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral programs in accordance with the Bologna Reforms.

The Bachelor degree programs begin with an Assessment year for all students. Upon successful completion of this year, students can then choose one of the following majors for their remaining two years of study:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration
  • Bachelor of Arts in Economics
  • Bachelor of Arts in Law
  • Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs
  • Bachelor of Arts in Law and Economics

The majority of students are enrolled in Business Administration. Only the University of Geneva and the University of St. Gallen offer an International Affairs program within Switzerland.

The Master's programs cover the same range of studies, but are more specialized. The Masters programs typically run from 1.5 to 2 years. The University offers the following Master's programs (M.A. HSG):[9]

  • Master of Arts in Quantitative Economics and Finance (MiQE/F), in English
  • Master of Arts in Banking and Finance (MBF), in English
  • Master of Arts in International Affairs and Governance (MIA), in English or German
  • Master of Arts in Information, Media and Technology Management (IMT), in German
  • Master of Arts in Marketing, Services and Communication Management (MSC), in German
  • Master of Arts in Accounting and Finance (MAccFin), in German
  • Master of Arts in Economics (MEcon), in German
  • Master of Arts in Law (MLS), in German
  • Master of Arts in Law and Economics (MLE), in German

Besides the CEMS Master’s in International Management, further double degrees may be obtained in cooperation with reputed partner universities such as Bocconi- Milan, ESADE- Barcelona, HEC Paris, NTU Singapore, Tufts University- USA, RSM- Rotterdam, or Sciences Po- Paris.

The courses consist of three didactic, subject-related pillars of Contact Studies, Independent Studies and Contextual Studies. Contact Studies consist of lectures and seminars in small groups. Students have to attend program-specific compulsory courses, core electives and independent electives. Independent Studies are multimedia supported and interactive, and they reinforce students' personal responsibility. In terms of subject matter, they complement Contact Studies. Contextual Studies consist of courses in cultural awareness, leadership skills and critical thinking.

Doctoral programs

At the doctoral level, the University of St. Gallen offers five distinctive programs:[10]

  • Ph.D. Program in Economics and Finance (PEF), in English, with a clear focus on fundamental research in the fields of Economics, Econometrics and Finance
  • Ph.D. Program in Management (PMA), in German with some courses taught in English, the largest doctoral program at the University of St. Gallen, with six areas of concentration: Accounting, Business Innovation, Finance, International Business, Strategy & Management and Marketing
  • Doctoral Program in International Affairs and Political Economy (DIA)
  • Doctoral Program in Organization Studies and Cultural Theory (DOK)
  • Doctoral Program in Law (DLS)

Besides these official programs, DocNet, a club at the University of St. Gallen, offers a wide range of research, cultural and social events for Ph.D. students.[11] Each year, support by the Swiss National Science Foundation allows many Ph.D. students at the University of St. Gallen to undertake parts of their research at reputable foreign universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Yale University or the University of Oxford.[12] According to a 2009 ranking by the Centre for Higher Education Development, a German think tank, the University of St. Gallen belongs to a top group of only six universities in Europe that provide an outstanding overall study situation for Master's and doctoral students in Economics.[13]

M.B.A. program and executive education

In 2005 the University of St. Gallen inaugurated its flagship one year full-time MBA program, the MBA-HSG[1]. The program runs over 12 months from September to August of each year. The program is subdivided into four teaching terms, which are each divided further into two blocks of studies. The first and the second term are devoted to the teaching of core courses including three courses in finance. The third term comprises electives and an integrative seminar. The final term offers students an MBA project, which is in the form of either an academic research project or a company based internship.

HSG also offers double MBA degree program in conjunction with Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. This 14 month program gives students from around the world the unique opportunity to participate in a truly international double degree MBA program studying on location in Switzerland and Singapore, ranked the 1st and 5th most competitive economies in the World (World Economic Forum, Global Competitiveness Report 2006-2007).[14]

Founded in the 1990s, the university started the MBL Program, which offers practicing attorneys and business executives the opportunity to learn about the legal problems that confront companies which operate or intend to operate in international markets. Topics include principles of European economic integration, European competition and antitrust law, the World Trade Organization, and U.S. laws related to international business transactions. In addition, there is solid coverage of the emerging topics in Corporate Governance, Finance, international Taxation and international Mergers & Acquisitions.

Research

The crystallization points of the globally recognized HSG research are the 40 institutes and research centres, which are an integral part of the University. The directors of the institutes double as HSG professors. Bringing theory and practice together, the institutes provide an important input for teaching at the University and play a significant role in furthering the careers of young academics. The 80 tenured professors, 60 assistant professors and senior lecturers, and more than 300 lecturers and 300 assistants, plus distinguished visiting professors cultivate the scientific discourse with the students.

  • HSG degrees are at a premium on the labour market. On average, graduates are able to choose from among 2.4 jobs.
  • Search for employment: More than 80% of graduates already have a job at the time of graduation.
  • The average salary of the first fixed job is CHF 81,500 for holders of a Bachelor's degree and CHF 96,000 for holders of a Master's degree.
  • The quota of HSG alumni in Swiss top management is outstanding. The HSG has the greatest placing power in Switzerland in Business Administration and is the runner-up with regard to Law.

In the Financial Times Executive Education 2009 the University of St.Gallen is ranked 30 globally and ranked 13 within Europe. Within the German speaking area, St.Gallen takes the lead.
