Who's Who in Opera: Ursula Riedinger

Riedinger, Ursula (Hindemith: Mathis der Maler). Soprano. Daughter of Riedinger, she is loved by the artist Mathis. The Cardinal's adviser tells her it would be an advantage to the state if she marries the Cardinal. Impressed by Ursula's willingness to marry him for the sake of her faith, the Cardinal blesses her but decides to withdraw from the world. Ursula admits her love for Mathis, but announces that she has decided to give up love and art and join the peasants in their revolt. Created (1938) by Judith Hellwig.
