USS Augusta

Five ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Augusta, the first four after the city of Augusta, Georgia, and the fifth after Augusta, Maine.

  • The first Augusta was a 14-gun brig in use from 1799 to 1801.
  • The second Augusta was the civilian side-wheel steamer Augusta built in 1853, purchased by the Navy in 1861 for use in the American Civil War, and sold in 1868. She was lost in 1877 in a storm.
  • The third Augusta (SP-946) was a privately owned wooden-hulled steam yacht, acquired by the Navy for wartime service in 1917 and returned to her original owner after the armistice in 1918.
