Vajpayee or Bajpai is a surname equivalent to Pandey, Awasthi, Mishra and Shukla especially prominent among North Indian Brahmins. They were the only entitled performers of vajpaya yagya.[clarification needed] Bajpai is synonymous to Vajpayee.[citation needed]
