Biography

The Aussie dance-rock act Van She features Michael Di Francesco (synths), Tomek Archer (drums), Nick Routledge (vocals/guitar), and Matt Van Schie (bass). With their foxy synth pop swagger, Van She formed in 2005 in the Sydney suburb of Bankstown. Each member of the band had responded to an ad in Sydney's Drum Media magazine and arrived at an audition for a vocalist for a doom metal band with influences such as Sepultura, Entombed, Black Skull -- and Phil Collins. The whole thing was a total hoax; however, they all became fast friends and scrambled up Van Schie's last name for the creation of Van She. A deal with Modular Recordings, which is home to Wolfmother and the Avalanches, was inked after just one gig and shows with the Presets, Wolf & Cub, Annie, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs soon followed in 2006. With the success of their eponymous debut EP, Van She were named Live Act of the Year by In the Mix magazine, and also earned a nomination in the Best Debut Artist category for the Dance Music Awards in their native Australia. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Van She is an Electropop band formed in 2005 in Sydney, Australia, with Matt Van Schie (pronounced Matt Van Ski) on bass guitar/vocals, Tomek Archer on drums/sequencer, Michael Di Francesco on synth/guitar and Nicholas Routledge on vocals/guitar. The band's debut album, V was released on the Australian label Modular Records in August 2008, which peaked at #10 on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) album charts.[1] Their label introduced them as a "new band from Sydney fresh on ideas, fresher than Flavor Flav, fresh like coriander, fresher than the Fresh Prince."[2] Despite these claims, the band began with a sound very much rooted in the 1980s, heavy on synthesizer, although later material reflects a more textured sound. They also remixed of other artists' work both under their own name and as the offshoot, Van She Technologic.[3][4]

History

Van She began in 2005 when band members Nick Routledge, Matt Van Schie, Michael Di Francesco, and Tomek Archer all met at a Bang Gang nights in Sydney. In 2005 Van She released their self-titled much hyped E.P. debut EP, Van She, on Modular Records with the single Sex City, which was in turn covered by the The Crystal Castles on their album Crystal Castles (March 18, 2008) – Lies Records / Last Gang Records. After coming off the back of tours with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, New Young Pony Club and play shows with the likes of Daft Punk and Phoenix, Van She released one of 2008’s more thrilling debut record trips in the shape of V. Which debuted at number #10 on the Australian charts. A collection of spacey, proggy dance sonics with it’s foot firmly planted in the pop world. The album was Co-Produced by Jim Abiss at Konk studios in London in 2007. In 2005 Van She released their self-titled debut EP, Van She, on Modular Records, and in 2008 released their debut album, V. In June 2009, they released a remixed version of V.
