Varian, Inc. (NASDAQ: VARI) is one of the largest manufacturers of scientific instruments for the scientific industry; they have offerings over the whole range of chemical analysis equipment, with a particular focus on Information Rich Detection and Vacuum technology. Varian, Inc was spun off from Varian Associates in 1999.
On July 27, 2009, rival instrument manufacturer Agilent Technologies agreed to purchase Varian for $1.5 billion, or $52 a share in an effort to boost Agilent's bioanalytical measurement business. The deal is expected to be approved by regulators and close by the end of 2009. Agilent expects the deal to reduce costs $75 million annually.[1]
