Plot
Kind-hearted and good conscientious Rajaraman aka Vasool Raja (Kamal Haasan), a small time don, does 'vasool (collection) business' with his right hand man Vaddi (Prabhu Ganesan), making a living by collecting money from people who refuse or dilly-dally in paying their debts to others. They are very happy living in the bylanes of Chennai, though his only problem is the annual visit of his parents from the village. His parents Venkataraman and Kasturi (Nagesh and Rohini Hattangadi) think Rajaraman is a Doctor who runs his own hospital. So on their arrival Raja's house is converted into the makeshift 'Venkataraman Charitable Hospital'. During a walking excursion, Nagesh meets his doctor friend Vishwanathan (Prakash Raj) and is keen to get his son married to his daughter Paapu (Sneha) who was a friend of Rajaraman during childhood. After finding out about Rajaraman's true character and profession, Dr. Vishwanathan breaks off the engagement and humiliates Venkataraman at a meeting at his house. This incident leaves his father totally heartbroken and prompts Rajaraman to change his ways for the better. He decides to become a doctor and enrolls in Dr. Vishwanathan's medical college. Now the story of Vasool Raja turning into a doctor kick starts.
Rajaraman uses the help of Dr. Margabandhu (Crazy Mohan) to cheat in the entrance exams and secure high marks. After entering the hospital he meets Dr. Janaki (Sneha}, unknown that she is really his old friend Paapu. He starts his hilarious antics from the very first day and then proceeds with making huge changes to the hospital including intimidating Dr. Kalidas into admitting and treating a suicide patient and later singing and dancing to cheer him up, humiliating senior students who pick on his roommate, providing a new bed for Anand-a vegetative patient, making friends with the cleaner and also helping a terminally ill cancer patient to enjoy his last few days.
When confronted by the dean (also Prakash Raj) Raja informs him that he has joined this college to teach him a lesson for humiliating his father. He then breaks all the plans made by the dean to remove him from the college, even inflicting injuries on himself to ensure that he stays in the hospital so that he is near Dr. Janaki. Unfortunately some time later while he is preparing for a quiz session, his cancer patient friend dies after a painful battle with the illness.
During the quiz session the next day in the College Assembly Hall, Rajaraman struggles to answer a question and then torn by remorse over the death of his friend, admits his failings in front of the audience before leaving in tears. Just as the dean is himself about to leave, Anand then makes a few moves in his wheelchair towards him before stopping. Sneha, shocked yet delighted to see the man recover, then glares at her father and ascends the podium, giving a speech about how Rajaraman brought about love and confidence when he was here due to his practical approach to all patients. This is shown after Anand smiles at the Dean, showing him that love conquers all.
In the final scene Rajaraman and his parents reconcile, and he then meets Paapu, who reveals herself to be Dr. Janaki. The film ends with the two embracing, and it is assumed that they get married.
