( b Zagreb, bap. 8 July 1819; d there, 31 May 1854). Croatian composer. He studied at the Prague Conservatory. The leading early Romantic composer in Croatia and founder of modern Croatian music, he wrote 142 works between 1841 and 1852; some draw on Czech and Croatian folk melody (the opera Porin, 1848-51), while others show his advanced harmonic and orchestral sense (the overture Bellona, 1849).

Vatroslav Lisinski

Vatroslav Lisinski (July 8, 1819 in ZagrebMay 31, 1854 Zagreb) was a Croatian composer.

Lisinski was one of the founders of the Illyrian movement, the return to Croatian cultural heritage, as a reaction to Magyarisation during Austro-Hungarian rule.

Lisinski composed the first Croatian opera, "Ljubav i zloba" ("Love and Malice", 1846), which he wrote at the urging of Alberto Štriga, and "Porin" (1851) as well as numerous works for orchestra, choir and soloists.

He changed his name from his Christened name Ignaz Fuchs to Vatroslav Lisinski, which is the Croatian translation of the former.
