Velten, also Velthen, Johannes (Halle, 1640-92 or 1693, Hamburg), studied theology from 1657 to 1661 and then became an actor in the troupe of Andreas Paul or Paulsen, which toured not only in Germany but also in Scandinavia and the Baltic lands. He is thought to have married Paul's daughter c.1672 and he took over the troupe in 1678. From 1685 he and his company were in the service of the Elector of Saxony. Velten took the actor's task seriously, raised the standard of acting and the quality of the repertoire, and sought to make the actor socially acceptable. After his death the company continued until 1711.
