Sports Science and Medicine: ventilation-perfusion ratio

A ratio of the volume of air that reaches the alveoli to the volume of blood supplying the alveoli. Gas exchange in the lungs is most efficient when there is a good match between ventilation and perfusion; an imbalance can cause anoxia and cyanosis.
