The Vermont Agency of Transportation helps to make it easy and safe to travel in the Northeast. The department oversees the maintenance of the state's transportation system for rail, air, public transit, and bikes for more than 600,000 residents in Vermont. It oversees the management of 16 airports, as well as 14,000 miles of roadway, 320 miles of Interstate, and some 2,400 miles of toll-free state highways. The legislature formed the agency by merging the highway, motor vehicles, aeronautics, and public transit departments in the 1980s. The organization has an annual budget of about $454 million.
