French Literature Companion:

Vers libres classiques

As opposed to modern vers libre [see Versification, 4], these are various fluid verse forms, mixing rhyme-schemes and lines of different lengths, used by many poets in the 17th and 18th c. The outstanding example is La Fontaine's Fables.
